1 Thessalonians 5 Respectful Peace
Week One-October 5
Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work
hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold
them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with
each other. 14 And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are
idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient
with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but
always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.
16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for
this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt 21 but
test them all; hold on to what is good, 22 reject every kind of evil.
23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through.
May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of
our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.
25 Brothers and sisters, pray for us. 26 Greet all God’s people with a holy
kiss. 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the
brothers and sisters. 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
12 Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who
work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who
admonish you. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of
their work. Live in peace with each other.
EP–And now, friends, we ask you to honor those leaders who work so
hard for you, who have been given the responsibility of urging and
guiding you along in your obedience. Overwhelm them with
appreciation and love!
Barclay-treat leaders with respect for the task they are doing-not about
personal prestige or ego-leaders should not demand respect-
Verbs to appreciate and to esteem are used together-
Leaders are those who exert themselves on behalf of others-work that
involves strenuous effort and difficulty-those who are working in and
because of love
Word here for physical labor-sweat and toil, striving and struggle-
those who oversee church with love and guidance-urging and
admonishment- Admonishers-those who help other believers obey God’s
commands and laws-
Esteem those who serve on your behalf, who are spiritual leaders, who are
self-less, who lead and who serve in and through love-
Servant and Cruciform leadership is model-those who do so should be
given honor and respect-because they point us to Jesus and because they
will be humble and will not let it get to their heads-
Be at peace-stop carping, stop fighting- Live at Peace-Gospel of love must
be preached in environment of love-ongoing challenge-
Hebrews 13:17-8– Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their
authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an
account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would
be of no benefit to you. Pray for us. We are sure that we have a clear
conscience and desire to live honorably in every way.
Romans 12:18–If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace
with everyone
Hebrews 12:14– Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be
holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.
Ephesians 4:2-3-Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with
one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit
through the bond of peace.
Peace requires effort-pray for leaders-pray for them to have joy, a clear
conscience and to live honorably-
